Born in 1974, Othar Lawrence grew up in Carbondale, Colorado, the town he still calls home, where he explored nearly every alpine sport. “In college, I was looking for fresh challenges, and that’s when I met my nemesis, the air,” he recounts. Othar made it his goal to conquer the skies, and he had the best possible teacher: his longtime friend (and now RBAF teammate), paragliding wizard Chris Santacroce. Then he headed to Europe. Othar remembers, “After two years of intense study overseas – airborne every possible waking moment – I was crowned U.S. Paragliding National Champion at the age of 23, the youngest ever.”

As Othar developed the Red Bull Air Force, he also pursued skydiving, flying paramotors, and BASE jumping, becoming expert enough to rollover from the dangerous low of a 200-foot cliff in Monument Valley and leap from the dizzying height of Switzerland’s Eiger ridge. In 2010, when Chris broke the record for longest limited-fuel paramotor flight in North America (121 miles), Othar paramotored alongside, scouting thermals that would allow Chris to eke out more mileage. To prepare, Othar returned to paragliding distance competition after a 10-year absence: he finished seventh in an elite field of nearly 100 at U.S. Nationals, and took such a commanding early lead at the Canadian championship that he finished third even though he missed two days of contention due to schedule conflicts. “Distance flying is a battle of wits and skill, and it was a good confidence builder to see that I was flying as well as I ever had,” Othar notes. “As an athlete you can think you’ve still got it, but until you measure it against other competitors you never really know.”

Othar also does aerial photography and videography, and he is voraciously learning airplane aerobatics. “By the time I’m an old man, I want to be accomplished at skydiving, BASE jumping, paragliding, hang gliding, paramotors, sailplanes, airplane aerobatics – everything,” he comments. “My mission is to spread the word that airsports are the most engaging, challenging, and fun sports imaginable, with the most creative playing field available: three dimensions.”
